2017 Terroir Series Kékfrankos
Kékfrankos, a dark-skinned variety from Central Europe (also known as Blaufränkisch in Austria, and Lemberger in Germany), is relatively obscure in Canada. As part of our ongoing quest to discover cold-hardy red vinifera varieties suitable for our cool climate, we planted a small block of this variety on our estate in 2013.
The Lightfoot & Wolfville Terroir Series is a collection of small-lot wines intended to showcase the Annapolis Valley's distinctive sense of place. The label imagery represents the unique growing conditions of our Oak Island Vineyard where our Kékfrankos grapes are grown. The leaves and acorns represent the Oak trees that sturdily line this vineyard site. The moths, pheasant and snakes represent the enhanced biodiversity we are beginning to witness since converting this land to organic agriculture. The pheasant is perched atop a Scottish thistle, an ode to our heritage. Finally, the eye looking through the keyhole signifies the human element of biodynamic farming and terroir expression.
