2016 Ancienne Pinot Noir

2016 Ancienne Pinot Noir

Ancienne, meaning old/ancient, is a faithful, living record of our terroir. The ultimate expression of our two estate vineyards and the pinnacle of our winegrowing efforts.

The label, styled to look like a page torn from an old book, features imagery of a red-tailed hawk holding a Mayflower - a symbol of Nova Scotia - in his beak, and an ancient Acadian farming tool in his talons. A tribute to those who cared for this land before us.

The 2016 vintage was our driest vintage to date, giving the ideal conditions for our Ancienne series wines. Fruit quality was exceptional with minimal disease pressure and good phenolic and sugar ripeness.

All grapes for this wine were sourced from our organic and biodynamic estate vineyard in Avonport, Nova Scotia. All fruit was hand-harvested and hand-sorted to yield the highest quality juice. Fermentation and full malolactic conversion took place using wild/indigenous yeasts to encourage a pure expression of the Oak Island Vineyard. Ageing of 18 months in French oak - mostly old/neutral barrels - gave support to the fruit without overshadowing terroir.

This wine is certified organic by Ecocert Canada and biodynamic by Demeter.

Tasting Notes

Vibrant ruby-red in the glass. Ethereally aromatic nose with red fruit - fresh cherry and cranberry - nuanced by an earthy note and a faint florality. Light bodied and balanced with fine, silky tannins, bright acidity, and a savory finish of impressive length. An elegant style of Pinot Noir that represents the vibrancy and finesse that Nova Scotia's distinctive cool-climate is gaining reputation for.

Fitting pairings include roast pork shoulder, fatty fish such as salmon, dishes featuring mushrooms or fresh herbs, and wild game.
