2016 Ancienne Chardonnay

At Lightfoot & Wolfville there is a constant connection to the generations before us and the many ahead. A sense that this is simply our turn, our watch. Ancienne, meaning old/ancient, is a collection of wines that we feel best represent “our turn” - the ultimate expression of our two estate vineyards and the pinnacle of our winegrowing efforts. The label, styled to look like a page torn from an old book, depicts a red-tailed hawk holding a mayflower in his beak and an ancient Ancient farming tool in his talons. A tribute to those who cared for this land before us.

Ancienne Chardonnay is a biodynamic (certified by Demeter), single-vineyard wine from the Lightfoot Home Farm Vineyard in Wolfville where excellent exposure, particularly fine soil drainage and incessant saltwater breezes combine with natural airflow to create conditions that are remarkably conducive to the growing of vibrant, distinctive and full-flavoured Chardonnay grapes. Spontaneous fermentation took place in barrel using indigenous yeasts. A full malolactic conversion, also indigenous, influenced mouthfeel and texture. Ageing of 18 months sur lie in French oak barriques (20% new, 80% old/neutral) took place before bottling, providing further texture and depth to the fruit.

Tasting Notes

Nuanced nose of fleshy yellow apple, lemon curd, white peach, and toasty-smoky notes indicative of well-integrated French oak. The palate is lively; concentrated, yet fresh, with bright acidity and a lengthy mineral finish. An elegant style of Chardonnay that represents the grace and balance that Nova Scotia’s distinct cool-climate is gaining a reputation for.

Fitting pairings include richer seafood dishes such as lobster or crab, cream-based sauces, roasted poultry and root vegetables, and creamy cheeses.

Serving Temperature: 12-14°C

Recommended Drinking: Though approachable beginning in 2018, this wine should be in its prime between 2020-2023 and possesses the structure to cellar up to a full decade.
