2018 Small-Lot Kékfrankos Rosé
Kékfrankos, a dark-skinned red vinifera variety from Central Europe (AKA Blaufränkisch in Austria and Lemberger in Germany), is relatively obscure in Canada. As part of our ongoing quest to uncover suitable cold-hardy grape varieties capable of crafting quality red wines in our ultra cool climate, we planted a small block of this variety on our estate in 2013.
The generous 2016 and 2017 vintages gave us two lightly-structured yet impressive reds that gained a quick following. The challenging 2018 growing season, book-ended by abnormal frost events, allowed us the rare and exciting opportunity to explore the unique proposition of full-flavoured Kékfrankos rosé with ripeness levels most conducive to this style.
Grapes were hand-harvested from our organic and biodynamic Oak Island Vineyard in Avonport, NS on the 26th of October. A 10-hour skin maceration gave a beautiful deep pink colour and red fruit flavours. Fermentation was 100% in stainless steel to preserve the primary fruit flavours and freshness.
